You know that moment?
When your patient gets it.
Really gets it.
When something you’ve said or done clicks, and suddenly, healing isn’t just possible, it’s inevitable.
That’s not just physical therapy.
That’s transformation.
And it’s because the story worked.
Story telling makes your knowledge real.
As a PT, you’re not just fixing bodies; you’re shaping life stories. Every injury has a narrative. Of pain, recovery, and transformation. When you guide patients, you’re inviting them into a better story. One of hope, strength, and possibility.
So how do you get better at storytelling in therapy?
1. Know Their Story Deeply: Ask the questions beyond symptoms. What dreams does this injury interrupt? What victories will recovery unlock?
2. Speak in Pictures: Patients remember vivid imagery, not technical jargon. A joint isn’t just inflamed—it’s a “door rusted shut, waiting for WD-40.”
3. Celebrate Each Chapter: Small milestones deserve celebrations. Every step forward reinforces the story they’re writing about themselves.
Remember. Patients don’t just heal physically. They heal when they rewrite their story with you. And that’s the shift that changes everything.
